Las Coloradas
Las Coloradas is a small fishing town located northeast of the Yucatan Peninsula, famous for its salt flats that produce high-quality salt.
The name of the place comes from the pink tones that the waters of the salt flats acquire due to the presence of microorganisms and algae. This natural phenomenon creates a stunning landscape where the water appears dyed bright pink, contrasting beautifully with the blue sky typical of the region.
Salt Production and Tourism
In addition to being a picturesque place, Las Coloradas is an important salt production center and an emerging tourist destination in Yucatán. Visitors can tour the salt pans and observe how salt is extracted and processed, as well as enjoy panoramic views of the pink ponds against the background of clear skies. The higher the temperature and salt concentration, the more intense the pink color will be.
Río Lagartos is another natural gem located on the northern coast of the Yucatán Peninsula, known for its scenic beauty and rich biodiversity. It is a small coastal town that serves as the gateway to the Ría Lagartos Biosphere Reserve, a protected area that is home to a wide variety of waterfowl, pink flamingos and crocodiles.
One of the unique experiences that Río Lagartos offers is the sand bath, known locally as the "Mayan bath." This traditional practice consists of diving into the shallow waters of the Gulf of Mexico and covering the body with the fine sand found on the seabed. This sand bath is believed to have therapeutic properties and is a refreshing and revitalizing experience for those who try it.
