Lagartos Estuary Biosphere Reserve
The Ría Lagartos Special Biosphere Reserve received this recognition from SEDUE in 1982.
It is located 270 km east of the city of Mérida.
Fauna and Flora
In this natural reserve there is a great variety of flora depending on its proximity to the sea, the lagoon or the mainland, for example submersible vegetation, mangroves, coastal dunes and petenes.
With regard to fauna we can consider the existence of: the Jaguar, the ocelot and the badger. As far as birdlife is concerned, it is mainly the pink flamingo of the Caribbean, which uses this reserve as a protection area for its nesting.
There are also different species of snakes such as the moccasin, two species of crocodiles and four species of turtles.
